SITREP

You and your colleagues landed covertly some three days prior under the cover of darkness as part of a small recon force tasked with identifying strategic objectives and landing zones for the impending invasion.

The planet is dead - a barren wasteland, sand as far as the eye can see, littered with the occasional weathered rock. What's shocked you so far is how empty it is: in three days, you've seen perhaps 3 or 4 arachnids, always from afar through the lens of a pair of binoculars. For the so called home world of the arachnids, there doesn't seem to be an awful lot of arachnids.

You've spent your time wisely: through scouting the many canyons that carve through the planet's face like nasty lacerations, you've noted several well shielded locations that would serve as perfect beachheads for the invasion to come. You've been told to be on the look out for caves - apparently much of bug civilization is subterranean - and you've found a potential half dozen that could be entrances, but you've been under strict instruction to go no further into them lest you tip the bugs off to the coming armada.

The invasion is scheduled to begin any moment now...
