History

One of the most recent colonies to be founded, the light of the Federation only reached Nizhiny in 2319. Nizhiny had an odd founding among many colonies; identified by Mormon explorer William Taylors. This discovery was not horded by the Mormon settlers - Rather, a unique middle ground was attempted to be reached between Mormon parties and the Federation. With Nizhiny boasting natural forests and rivers, there was little need for much terraforming work. Nothing that'd need a heavy Federation presence on the world. With Nizhiny's unique geography and location outside the AQZ, a special agreement was reached between The Federation and the colony's Mormon explorers.

Nizhiny was granted a form of semi-autonomy from The Federation, not too dissimilar from what's been given towards other colonies. The Mormons were authorized to lay a claim on a limited territory of Nizhiny. Within the territory, Federation education standards are followed, including the teach of Morals & Philosophy and a single recruiting station is garrisoned there. However, besides that the territory is more or less self governing. Civilians aren't obligated to pay Federation taxes, with only a small agricultural export being required to local Federation units, and managed by the local colonial administration.

In return for their self-autonomy within their allotted territory, much of Nizhiny is under the supervision of The Federation's military forces. Vast swathes of the planet are used for field-testing Federation weaponry due to the planet's isolated nature. As well as that, a communication post was setup both on the planet and in it's surrounding asteroid belt; though, the latter has recently been claimed by FFRL.

Despite the wishes of the colonist for a peaceful living, a new galactic eye has been set upon Nizhiny. A week after Klendathu, a bug meteor was detected within the planet's exosphere, headed for the testing grounds. This occurred shortly after the UCF Alvin-York had been stopped at the colony in order to resupply. At current, the Alvin-York is being held within the system for further orders.

Laws and Government

Nizhiny has one of the most unique governments within The Federation. An experiment by The Federation, one aimed at stabilizing a particular rocky period of Federal-Mormon relations. The colony boasts a form of self-autonomy within it's limited zone. Civilians within this zone are only obligated to three Federation standards: - Each resident must be tested for Psychic potential every four years. - Each resident must go through, and pass, at least one year of History & Moral Philosophy, hosted by a citizen. - Each resident has the right to enlist within the UCF's military branches and this cannot be impeded by the government.

Besides that, it's easy-going for many of the citizens of Nizhiny. While local taxes are paid, Federal taxes aren't imposed on the citizens of Nizhiny. Though, somewhat controversially, they lack a seat within SICON. The colonial administration, as it's referred too is free to set its own laws and political systems, under the auspice that the official governor of Nizhiny must still be a citizen. To that end, while no official PDF has been formed by the colonial administration, Nizhiny operates communication outposts and testing facilities both on the planet and in its asteroid belt. A single recruiting station lays within the capitol, Lehi. Posting at the recruiting station is considered to be a career death-sentence within The Federation, as Nizhiny has one of the lowest citizenship rates throughout. As opposed to Iskandar's 80% citizenship rate, only 2% of Nizhiny are citizens.

Economy

One of Nizhiny's few attributes it can truly boasts, the colony has a robust economy, for its size. Bolstered by the world's natural water and forests, Nizhiny has a popular agricultural industry that's received corporate attention. It's a lifestyle reputably enjoyed by many of the more austere civilians of the world, whom are simply looking to settle a peaceful life. Included in their semi-autonomous state, Nizhiny is a participant within The Federation's vast economical systems.

Pertaining to it's agricultural basis, one of the other few conditions for the agreement of Nizhiny's settlement was that agricultural materials would be provided by the colonial administration for Federal units in the territory.

Points of Interest

Lehi:

The capitol of Nizhiny and the one recognized settlement that exists on the world. It maintains a small population of 200, and it's more akin, truly, to a small town than any city seen within Iskandar and Earth. All political and economic happenings occur in Lehi, due to it boasting the one spaceport on the world. Despite its importance, it's not the only settlement that exists on Nizhiny. Many Mormon settlers live miles outside Lehi, operating small farms.

Duesenberg Belt:

An asteroid belt orbiting the planet. While untouched by the Mormon settlers, corporate interest has reigned over the Duesenberg belt due to interest in mining it for resources. At current however, the Duesenberg Belt is untouched by any civilian authorities. A small contingent of Military Intelligence, Fleet Marines & Federal Forward Research Laboratory operate a base within the belt. However, any further information is classified.

Greenwood Testing Grounds:

Greenwood Testing Grounds is a facility operated on Nizhiny outside of Mormon territory, and is official Federal territory on the colony. Maintained by the Mobile Infantry, predominately precise Aviation technology and new Infantry fighting technology has been tested at Greenwood. As well as that, the facility is duel-purpose; boasting a small communication station with the wider Federation.
